  • This mix is based on the Shunamite diet. The Shunamite diet is a well-respected diet in the rat community and is based on the book ‘The Scuttling Gourmet – by Alison Campbell’.

    Positives of the Shunamite diet

Rats are given a range of ingredients much like they would in the wild. Using lots of ingredients helps balance the strengths and weaknesses of each ingredient in terms of vitamins and minerals. Using a variation of processed and unprocessed grains again balances vitamin and mineral availability but also promotes natural foraging behavior of having to take the inedible shells off some of the grains. Processed grains such as human cereals are also fortified with additional vitamins and minerals.

    Negatives of the Shunamite diet

The Shunamite diet uses volume, not weight to mix ingredients and only views ingredients as part of 5 categories, not individually. Whilst this is an accepted at home mix recipe, by mixing only by volume and with no regard to individual ingredients nutritional composition, mix nutrition can vary drastically depending on the ingredients chosen and how much of each is in the mix. It is not possible to calculate nutritional composition of a mix of ingredients if mixing by volume only.

    How this mix differs

This mix uses the volumes converted to weight to more accurately formulate the mix. Every ingredient's nutritional composition is considered and used to determine how much is added to the mix. For example, this means that ingredients across all categories are considered when looking at the protein content, not just those which would typically fall under the 'protein section' in the Shunamite diet. Doing this allows the 'protein section' to be measured accordingly with regards to all of the ingredients actually in the mix. This allows a much more accurate view of the nutrition compared to the mixing only by volume of the conventional Shunamite diet. Overall protein and fat content of the mix are determined using the weight of each ingredient.

    My boys love it!

I have waited until now to give a review to see if my rats actually liked the food. I wanted to give my four boys the best start nutritionally as I could and the shunamite diet ticked all the boxes for me.

It's packed with everything my boys need to grow and stay as healthy as possible. I will always continue to purchase this food and would 100% recommend to anyone thinking of trying it.

    Nice natural mix of ingredients

I had tried another mix from a different supplier and it smelled weird and like perfume. I was glad that this mix from CHH is all natural and a nice mix of ingredients. My rats love it.

Very quick delivery and good quality ingredients. Had an issue once where my food did not arrive, and the seller was very apologetic and sent it out the next day and even put an extra bag in for free! Very good customer service, would recommend 👌
